BALTIMORE, MD – Edward Burton, 38, of Jessup, Maryland, is headed to federal prison for 13 years after pleading guilty to trafficking fentanyl and being a felon in possession of firearms. The bust, part of a larger investigation into a Baltimore drug-trafficking operation, uncovered a staggering arsenal of weapons and a fortune in cash and jewelry.
According to court documents, the DEA initiated the investigation that led to Burton. A raid on a “stash house” connected to the operation on December 15, 2021, yielded a horrifying 431.25 grams of fentanyl – including 6,450 gelatin capsules – along with the tools of the trade: packaging materials and drug paraphernalia. But the drugs weren’t the only thing stashed away. Seven firearms and a significant quantity of ammunition were also recovered, including three 9mm handguns, an AR-15 style rifle, and a .45-caliber handgun.
The investigation didn’t stop there. Law enforcement simultaneously executed search warrants at Burton’s home and a rented storage unit. At his residence, agents found another two handguns (.380 and .38 caliber) and nearly $15,000 in cash, alongside a dazzling $447,950 worth of jewelry – clear proceeds from the illegal drug trade. The storage unit revealed even more firepower: three additional handguns (two .40 caliber and one 9mm), one of which was equipped with a high-capacity 20-round magazine. A 2019 Mercedes Benz AMG GT 63S, registered to Burton, was also seized.
The sentencing was announced jointly by U.S. Attorney Erek L. Barron, along with leaders from the DEA, ATF, and local police departments in Anne Arundel and Baltimore counties. Special Agent in Charge Toni M. Crosby of the ATF Baltimore Field Division highlighted the agency’s commitment to stemming the flow of illegal firearms and disrupting criminal networks. Authorities emphasized this case is a key component of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal program aimed at reducing violent crime.
The prosecution was conducted under the umbrella of the Department of Justice’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) Co-located Strike Forces Initiative, designed to foster collaboration between federal agencies. The initiative, officials stated, allows for more effective intelligence gathering and targeted enforcement against sophisticated criminal organizations. The total value of cash and jewelry seized from Burton’s operation exceeds $462,000.
Burton’s 13-year sentence is followed by four years of supervised release. While the takedown of Burton represents a victory for law enforcement, it’s a stark reminder of the ongoing fentanyl crisis gripping Baltimore and the nation, and the dangerous combination of drugs and firearms fueling violence in American cities. The DEA and ATF continue to investigate potential co-conspirators and trace the origins of the fentanyl and firearms seized in this operation.
