Edward Soybel, Server Hacking, Illinois 2024

CHICAGO — In a gritty cyber-attack that struck at the heart of W.W. Grainger Inc.’s operations, former IT specialist Edward Soybel has been sentenced to three years in federal prison. Soybel, 35, of Chicago, was found guilty of hacking into the company’s servers, causing significant damage and financial loss.

Soybel, who had served as a technical support contractor at Grainger’s Niles facility until early 2016, systematically breached the Lake Forest-based firm’s automated inventory management system. His attacks, spanning multiple occurrences in late 2016, targeted on-site dispensing machines that securely distribute products like safety equipment across the United States.

In what U.S. District Judge Matthew F. Kennelly called a significant aggravating factor, Soybel also threatened violence to law enforcement, which resulted in an increased sentence. Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Eichenseer argued during sentencing that Soybel’s actions were not a mere lapse of judgment but an act of cyber warfare driven by spite.

According to evidence presented at trial, Soybel gained unauthorized access to Grainger’s secure inventory-management system by stealing former co-workers’ login credentials. Once inside, he deleted millions of database records and reset passwords, leading to system outages and temporary impairment of dispensing machines. These attacks resulted in at least $300,000 in costs for Grainger to respond.

The prosecution highlighted that Soybel’s crime was premeditated, with his hacking campaign beginning in July 2016 and continuing for several months. U.S. Attorney John R. Lausch, Jr., and FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Jeffrey S. Sallet announced the sentence, emphasizing the severity of the cyber-attack on a multi-national industrial supply company.

Chicago Police Department’s valuable assistance was acknowledged in bringing Soybel to justice. The case serves as a stark reminder of the potential for harm that cybercriminals can inflict and underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity measures.
