A loaded Remington .22 caliber rifle found under a couch in Iowa Falls has landed 39-year-old Edward Whitney back behind bars. Whitney, with a criminal resume that includes attempted first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery, was sentenced to 41 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The arrest unfolded October 17, 2017, when Iowa Falls police responded to a reported domestic assault at Whitney’s residence. During the investigation, officers discovered the firearm stashed beneath couch cushions—less than six months after Whitney had admitted to possessing it in June 2017. The weapon, immediately seized, triggered a federal case due to his status as a convicted felon.
Whitney entered a guilty plea in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids, where Judge Linda R. Reade imposed the 41-month sentence. In addition to prison time, Whitney will serve three years of court-supervised release upon completion of his term. Federal law bars parole, meaning he must serve at least 85% of the sentence before possible release.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Justin Lightfoot and investigated by the Iowa Falls Police Department. Authorities emphasized that Whitney’s violent criminal history made his possession of any firearm an immediate threat to public safety. His prior convictions include accessory after the fact to armed robbery and multiple violent offenses dating back over a decade.
This conviction was brought under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide initiative revived in 2017 by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions to combat violent crime through targeted federal prosecution. The program directs U.S. Attorney’s Offices to focus on habitual offenders and illegal gun possession as key drivers of community violence.
Whitney is currently in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, awaiting transfer to a federal prison. Court records, including case file 17-CR-61, are accessible via the Northern District of Iowa’s electronic filing system. For updates, follow @USAO_NDIA on Twitter.
