El Paso Couple Faces Federal Charges in Horrific Child Abuse Case
EL PASO, Texas – Cecilia Stepaniak, 34, and Coreydon Stepaniak, 34, of El Paso, are facing a litany of federal charges following their arrest in connection with the alleged abuse of a child over a nearly five-year period. The couple’s actions, detailed in a four-count federal indictment, paint a disturbing picture of systematic cruelty and neglect.
From April 2019 to February 2024, the Stepaniaks allegedly subjected the minor victim – under the age of 15 – to conditions that placed them in imminent danger of death, bodily injury, and severe physical and mental impairment. Court documents reveal a pattern of abuse that went far beyond simple discipline. The indictment alleges the couple falsely claimed the child was being bullied to excuse their removal from school, and then systematically restricted the child’s food intake, effectively starving them.

If convicted on all counts, each defendant faces a substantial prison sentence. The conspiracy charge carries a potential sentence of up to five years. The injury to a child charge carries a minimum of 180 days up to two years. The endangerment and abandonment charges are the most severe, with a minimum of two years and a maximum of 20 years behind bars.
U.S. Attorney Jaime Esparza for the Western District of Texas announced the indictment, emphasizing the seriousness of the allegations.
