A federal grand jury has indicted Crescencio Pacheco Olvera, a 36-year-old El Paso man, on charges related to an alleged alien smuggling operation in Alabama.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Alabama, federal agents uncovered a stash house containing 16 undocumented individuals in a failed smuggling attempt. The operation is believed to be one of the largest in recent history.
The indictment alleges that Olvera was involved in the smuggling operation, which transported undocumented individuals across the U.S.-Mexico border. The individuals were then housed in a stash house in Alabama until they could be transported to their final destinations.
The investigation, led by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), uncovered evidence of a sophisticated smuggling operation, including records of payments made to smugglers and communications with co-conspirators.
Olvera faces charges of Alien Smuggling, Conspiracy to Commit Alien Smuggling, and Aiding and Abetting. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Alabama. The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed as more evidence is uncovered.
The discovery of the stash house highlights the ongoing threat of alien smuggling operations in the United States. Law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to disrupt and dismantle these operations, and bring those responsible to justice.
