Jefferson County man TORRVEZ LEMARCUS CALDWELL, 22, was hauled into federal custody Thursday in Birmingham on a charge of sex trafficking of a minor, stemming from a 2015 case that’s resurfaced with a federal indictment this past April.
The U.S. Marshals Service, working with the FBI, took down CALDWELL as part of a coordinated takedown during National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month — a grim reminder that predators from years past are still being hunted.
Acting U.S. Attorney Robert O. Posey confirmed the arrest, stating CALDWELL faces one count of sex trafficking of a minor, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of life in prison and a $250,000 fine. No plea has been entered yet.
On Monday, CALDWELL appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge John Ott for arraignment. He remains locked up pending further proceedings, with federal prosecutors making it clear they’re treating the case with the severity it demands.
The FBI led the investigation into the exploitation, which has remained under wraps for years. Assistant U.S. Attorney Xavier O. Carter is now handling the prosecution as the Justice Department moves to hold CALDWELL accountable.
Officials stress that an indictment is not a conviction — CALDWELL is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. But the arrest sends a message: time doesn’t erase crimes against children.
