PANAMA CITY, FLORIDA – An interstate human trafficking ring has been dismantled, with eight leaders sentenced to prison time for their roles in exploiting dozens of women for prostitution across multiple states.

The defendants, all of whom resided illegally in the United States, were sentenced in federal court in the Northern District of Florida. Edegardo Osorno Rodriguez, 38, of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, was sentenced to 60 months in prison, while Mauro Gonzalez-Lira, 25, of McComb, Mississippi, received the same sentence. Jose Juan Ruiz Prudencio, 41, of Montgomery, Alabama, was sentenced to 48 months, and Romon Tobon, 46, of Starkville, Mississippi, received 42 months.

Antonio Flores-Esparza, 32, of Pensacola, Florida, was sentenced to 24 months, while Jose Alvaro Trujillo-Santiz, 46, of Panama City Beach, Florida, received 18 months. Emerson Corvera, 21, of Montgomery, Alabama, was sentenced to 9 months, and Rosa Mirtha Cruz Vidal, 35, of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, received 8.5 months. Cruz Vidal has already been deported from the United States.

The defendants were part of a conspiracy that brought dozens of women into the country illegally and exploited them for prostitution in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana between 2014 and 2015. They wired the prostitution proceeds outside the United States.

“Combatting human trafficking is a priority of my office, and the trafficking of women for commercial sex is a significant part of the human trafficking problem that our country faces,” said United States Attorney Christopher P. Canova. “This office will continue to partner with our federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to investigate and vigorously prosecute the trafficking of vulnerable victims for sex.”

The case was the result of a 15-month investigation into human trafficking activities by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Stephen M. Kunz.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida is one of 94 offices that serve as the nation’s principal litigators. The defendants will be turned over to the Department of Homeland Security for deportation upon completion of their sentences.
