Luis Valero-Carrizales’ 53-Human Smuggling Stunt Foiled
In a brazen attempt to smuggle 53 aliens into the United States, Luis Valero-Carrizales, a 39-year-old Mexican national on a visitor visa, has been put behind bars for 30 months. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos, following Valero-Carrizales’ guilty plea on April 4, 2018.
According to authorities, on December 16, 2017, Valero-Carrizales was driving an 18-wheeler freightliner with a load of produce, when he approached the primary inspection lane at the U.S. Border Patrol Checkpoint near Falfurrias. It was during a routine immigration inspection that a service canine alerted to the trailer, leading to a search of the vehicle.
During the search, authorities discovered the 53 illegal aliens hidden inside the refrigerated trailer, which was maintained at a chilling 54 degrees. The incident has sparked concerns about the increasing trend of human smuggling in the region.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations conducted the investigation with the assistance of the U.S. Border Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey S. Miller is prosecuting the case.
Valero-Carrizales is expected to face deportation proceedings following his release from prison. His sentence marks the latest in a string of high-profile human smuggling cases in Texas.
The investigation and subsequent sentencing serve as a stark reminder of the dangers and consequences of human smuggling. As the U.S. continues to grapple with the issue, the Grimy Times will continue to bring you in-depth coverage of this critical story.
