NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – Lorenzo Alexander Benitez, a 40-year-old native of El Salvador, has been indicted for illegal re-entry of a removed alien, announced U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans. The indictment highlights a brazen disregard for U.S. immigration laws.
According to the indictment, Benitez reentered the United States illegally after being previously deported on July 27, 2018. This reckless decision has put him in the crosshairs of the law, and if convicted, he faces a sentence of up to 2 years imprisonment, up to 1 year of supervised release, up to a $250,000 fine, and a mandatory $100 special assessment fee.
U.S. Attorney Evans emphasized that an indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. In a statement, Evans praised the work of United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations in investigating this matter.
Assistant United States Attorneys Paul J. Hubbell and Spiro Latsis of the General Crimes Unit are in charge of the prosecution. They have vowed to bring Benitez to justice and hold him accountable for his actions.
The indictment serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of re-entering the United States after being deported. It’s a clear message to those who would seek to disregard our nation’s laws: you will be caught and you will face the consequences.
Benitez’s actions not only put himself at risk but also threaten the safety and security of the American people. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly to protect our borders and uphold the rule of law.
