Eliezer Rosario-Ramos, Carjacking, Puerto Rico 2018

A 77-year-old woman who was beaten and robbed by two carjackers in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, has seen her attackers brought to justice. Eliezer Rosario-Ramos, one of the perpetrators, has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for the gruesome crime.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Puerto Rico, Rosario-Ramos and his co-defendant, Orlando Miguel Martínez-Ramos, broke into the woman’s home on August 15, 2018, around 9 PM. The brothers threw a cloth over the victim’s head and beat her with a frying pan, taking her debit cards, cellphone, and television. They then stole her Toyota Corolla and withdrew hundreds of dollars from her bank account.

The Puerto Rico Police Bureau arrested Rosario-Ramos and Martínez-Ramos the following day while they were driving in Condado in the stolen vehicle. The Federal Bureau of Investigation led the investigation, and Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan Gottfried prosecuted the case.

Rosario-Ramos was sentenced to 23 years in prison for his role in the carjacking. His co-defendant, Martínez-Ramos, received an 18-year prison sentence. The harsh sentences reflect the severity of the crime and the need for accountability.
