GREAT FALLS — A Cut Bank man has been charged with a heinous crime that has left a teenage girl with a broken jaw and a lifetime of trauma.
Elijah John Bullcalf, 21, pleaded guilty to assault resulting in serious bodily injury in a federal court in Great Falls, Montana. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release.
The assault is alleged to have taken place on May 25, 2023, at a residence in Browning, on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. According to court documents, Bullcalf got into an argument with the victim, a 17-year-old girl identified as Jane Doe, and struck her in the face, breaking her jaw.
But that was not the only time Bullcalf allegedly assaulted Doe. About a month after the initial assault, he struck her again in the same part of the jaw, causing pain and bleeding. It wasn’t until early 2024, when Doe and her mother reported the assault to law enforcement, that Bullcalf finally admitted to the crime.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office is prosecuting the case, with the FBI and Blackfeet Law Enforcement Services conducting the investigation. The case is now set for sentencing on April 10, 2025.
Bullcalf is currently being held pending further proceedings. The court will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The community is left to wonder how such a heinous crime could have occurred, and what could have been done to prevent it. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
