Muskogee Resident Receives Life Sentence for Brutal Murder

MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – In a shocking turn of events, Elijha Dewayne Taylor, a 34-year-old Okmulgee resident, has been sentenced to life in prison for committing a heinous first-degree murder.

On March 4, 2023, Taylor approached a Muskogee apartment building, entered an apartment, and intentionally shot the victim in the back of the head with a .22 firearm before fleeing the scene. The victim later succumbed to their injuries at a local hospital.

The investigation into the crime was a collaborative effort between the Muskogee Police Department, the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. After a thorough probe, Taylor was found guilty by a federal jury on April 23, 2024, of both first-degree murder and a federal firearms violation.

The Honorable Keith Starrett, a U.S. District Judge, presided over the hearing in Muskogee. As a result of the guilty verdict, Taylor will serve a non-paroleable sentence of incarceration. The sentence includes a consecutive ten-year term for the federal firearms violation.

Taylor will remain in the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending transportation to a designated United States Bureau of Prisons facility. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Richard J. Lorenz and Gregory Dean Burris represented the United States in this case.

The community is breathing a sigh of relief now that justice has been served. The residents of Muskogee can rest easier knowing that a vicious killer has been held accountable for their crimes.
