Elkhart Felon Gets Decade Behind Bars for Gun Possession

SOUTH BEND – In a tough stance against illegal gun possession, Toby Ray Taylor, 36, of Elkhart, Indiana, faced the music after being sentenced to 120 months in federal prison by Judge Damon R. Leichty.

Taylor, who already had an outstanding parole warrant, found himself on the wrong side of the law when police tried to pull over his car. The 36-year-old’s attempt to flee ended with his capture, and officers discovered a loaded handgun, complete with an extended magazine and an obliterated serial number, tucked under the driver’s seat. Methamphetamine and marijuana were also uncovered in the vehicle.

It wasn’t Taylor’s first brush with the law. His prior felony conviction had already stripped him of the right to possess firearms. The Department of Justice (DOJ) USAO for Indiana announced his sentence, which included a subsequent three years of supervised release.

This case was a collaboration between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with support from the St. Joseph County Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Luke N. Reilander and Frank E. Schaffer prosecuted the charges against Taylor.

Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) has once again taken center stage, highlighting the government’s commitment to reducing violent crime and gun violence. The program focuses on fostering trust in communities, supporting local organizations, strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.

The May 26, 2021, launch of a new strategy for PSN marked a significant step in reinforcing these principles to make neighborhoods safer across the nation.
