SCRANTON – Ellis Hawkins, a 46-year-old inmate at United States Penitentiary Canaan, has been indicted for a brutal assault on a corrections officer.
According to sources, Hawkins allegedly struck the officer in the face with his head during an altercation at the prison in December, leaving the victim with substantial injuries.
United States Attorney Bruce D. Brandler announced the indictment, which was handed down by a federal grand jury on April 11, 2017.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and officers at USP Canaan, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean A. Camoni set to prosecute the case.
Hawkins is facing a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine if found guilty.
The sentence will be determined by the Judge, who will consider a range of factors, including the nature and seriousness of the offense, Hawkins’ history and characteristics, and the need to punish the defendant, protect the public and provide for his educational, vocational and medical needs.
It’s worth noting that indictments are only allegations, and Hawkins is presumed innocent until found guilty in court.
