ELYRIA, OH – Jonathon E. Schubert, 29, of Elyria, Ohio, is facing federal charges following a grand jury indictment alleging he orchestrated a string of brazen robberies targeting PNC Bank branches across Northern Ohio. Schubert is accused of hitting three separate banks in Sheffield Village, Cleveland, and North Olmsted between November 2013 and March 2014.
According to the indictment unsealed today, Schubert allegedly stole approximately $15,315.75 during the three heists. The most serious charge stems from the November 26, 2013 robbery, where Schubert is accused of brandishing a firearm while demanding money from bank tellers. This adds a significant penalty to the already severe potential sentence.
United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, Steven M. Dettelbach, announced the indictment, a culmination of an investigation led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Details released by the DOJ indicate the FBI has been building a case against Schubert for months, meticulously piecing together evidence from each of the robberies.
If convicted on all counts, Schubert’s fate will be determined by the Court, taking into account his criminal history (if any), his specific role in the robberies, and the unique circumstances of each incident. While the statutory maximum sentence looms large, prosecutors typically seek a punishment fitting the specific details of the crime, and it is rarely the maximum allowed by law.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Adam J. Hollingsworth is leading the prosecution. However, it’s crucial to remember that this indictment represents only allegations. Schubert is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. He is entitled to a full and fair trial where the government must present compelling evidence to secure a conviction.
The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it moves through the federal court system. Schubert’s next court date has not yet been announced. We will provide updates as they become available, offering an unflinching look at the dark side of justice in Northern Ohio.
