A pediatrician from Sun City, Arizona, has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for distributing child pornography. Emilio Luna, 44, was handed the sentence by U.S. District Judge David G. Campbell on March 30, 2015. The sentence will be followed by a lifetime term of supervised release.
Luna, who was a practicing pediatrician at the time of his crimes, pleaded guilty to two counts of distribution of child pornography. In addition to his prison sentence, he is also required to register as a sex offender and is prohibited from working as a pediatrician.
The investigation into Luna’s crimes was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The prosecution was handled by Melissa Karlen and Sharon Sexton, Assistant U.S. Attorneys, District of Arizona, Phoenix.
Luna’s crimes were part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The initiative was launched in May 2006 by the U.S. government and marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
