Omaha, NE – In a shocking display of disregard for the law, Emmanuel John, a 25-year-old Trip Set gang member, was found guilty of six counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The conviction comes after a series of controlled buys, during which John sold eight guns to a confidential informant between July 2018 and August 2018.
As a convicted felon, John is prohibited from possessing a firearm. However, he continued to sell guns to the informant, despite being out on parole for two robbery convictions. Four of the firearms sold by John were reported as stolen, adding to the severity of the charges.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Omaha Police Department as part of Project Safe Neighborhood, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer for everyone. The program, reinvigorated by the federal government in 2017, brings together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to develop effective, locally-based strategies to reduce violent crime.
John’s arrest was also part of Operation South Sudan Soldiers, a targeted effort to dismantle the Trip Set and African Pride street gangs. Following his arrest, John’s parole was revoked, and he was sent back to the Nebraska Department of Corrections. He was later transferred to federal custody on March 24, 2020.
On [date], John was sentenced by United States District Judge Brian C. Buescher to 290 months in the Bureau of Prisons. He will also serve three years of supervised release following his release from prison. There is no parole in the federal system, ensuring that John will serve the full term of his sentence.
The severity of John’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violating federal laws. As a convicted felon, John had already been given a second chance through his parole, but he chose to disregard the law and put himself and others at risk. His sentence is a testament to the effectiveness of Project Safe Neighborhood and the efforts of law enforcement agencies to reduce violent crime in our communities.
