Man Gets 36 Months for Hiding Felony

A Lincoln, Nebraska man has been sentenced to 36 months in custody for hiding a felony. Gilbert Young, 43, was convicted of Misprision of a Felony and will serve his sentence consecutively to his Cherry County, Nebraska case. He was also ordered to pay $32,881.66 in restitution, jointly and severally with his co-defendant, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Young’s case is one of several high-profile crimes to hit the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation in recent years.

According to court documents, Young and his then-girlfriend, Terri Covey, were living together on the reservation in February 2013. Covey left a child in Young’s care, but he failed to seek medical attention when the child suffered a severe seizure. Young and Covey were indicted on May 13, 2014, and both pled guilty in December 2014.

Covey, 41, was also sentenced to 12 months in custody, two years of supervised release, $32,881.66 in restitution, jointly and severally with her co-defendant, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. She was convicted of Assault Resulting in Substantial Bodily Injury.

The case was investigated by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Maher prosecuted the case. Both defendants were immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

The sentences come as a relief to victims of violence on the reservation, who have long called for tougher penalties for those who commit crimes.
