Manderson Man Sentenced For Stolen Vehicle
In a shocking incident that left authorities scrambling, a Manderson, South Dakota man led police on a high-speed chase after stealing a pickup truck in White Clay, Nebraska. Clayton J. Fire Thunder, 28, was behind the wheel of the stolen vehicle on January 13, 2012, when he sparked a chaotic pursuit around the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
Fire Thunder’s reckless driving ended when he was cornered by police units. However, his troubles were far from over. The defendant was indicted for Larceny and Interstate Transportation of a Stolen Motor Vehicle by a federal grand jury on March 20, 2012.
The indictment marked the beginning of a long and winding road for Fire Thunder. On March 13, 2013, he pled guilty to the second charge of Interstate Transportation of a Stolen Motor Vehicle. Less than a month later, he was sentenced to time served.
Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, of the U.S. District Court, handed down the sentence on July 10, 2013. Fire Thunder was also ordered to serve one year of supervised release and pay $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The investigation into the stolen vehicle incident was a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman prosecuted the case, bringing Fire Thunder to justice for his role in the stolen vehicle incident. The sentencing of the Manderson man serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of reckless behavior and the importance of community collaboration in bringing wrongdoers to account.
