Lawrence Bassette, Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, South Dakota 2013

Lawrence Bassette, a 28-year-old man from Winnebago, Nebraska, has been sentenced to six months in prison for his role in a vicious assault at the Lower Brule jail.

The incident occurred on January 30, 2013, when Bassette and another prisoner began to fight. The altercation escalated, with Bassette sticking his finger into the victim’s eye and putting him in a headlock. When the victim tried to break free, Bassette threw him to the ground, causing him to hit his head on the concrete.

The victim sustained a laceration to the top of his head and injury to his eye as a result of the assault. Bassette pleaded guilty to the charges on August 13, 2013, immediately prior to sentencing.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno handed down the sentence on August 13, 2013, also ordering Bassette to pay a $10 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The investigation into the incident was led by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Lower Brule Agency. Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy Morley prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.

Bassette was immediately taken into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following the sentencing. The conviction serves as a reminder of the severity of violent crimes and the consequences that can result from such actions.

The harsh sentence handed down to Bassette serves as a deterrent to others who may consider engaging in similar behavior. It also brings a measure of justice to the victim, who suffered serious injuries as a result of the assault.
