Eric Vien, $270M Medicaid Fraud, Sacramento CA 2024

A California man pleaded guilty yesterday to submitting nearly $270 million in fraudulent claims over an 11-month span to California’s Medicaid program (Medi-Cal) for expensive prescription drugs that were medically unnecessary and, in many instances, not provided to the purported recipients.

Eric Vien, 45, of Sacramento, California, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California, announced United States Attorney Phillip A. Talbert.

Between January 2022 and November 2022, Vien and his co-conspirators submitted nearly $270 million in fraudulent claims to Medi-Cal for expensive prescription drugs that were medically unnecessary and, in many instances, not provided to the purported recipients.

The investigation revealed that Vien and his co-conspirators used various means to submit the fraudulent claims, including creating fake patient identities and using the Social Security numbers of real patients without their knowledge or consent.

The conspiracy to commit health care fraud charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Vien is scheduled to be sentenced on June 24, 2024.

The case is the result of an investigation by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the California Department of Justice.
