Erie Man Admits to Arson at Furniture Store
A devastating fire that destroyed Fred’s Beds and Furniture in Erie, Pennsylvania, has led to a guilty plea from the suspect. According to sources, Tony Crawford, 35, a former resident of Erie, pleaded guilty to one count of malicious destruction of property by fire in federal court.
The fire, which occurred on February 5, 2016, at the Fred’s Beds and Furniture building located at 117 East 12th Street in Erie, was the result of Crawford’s deliberate actions. Investigators revealed that Crawford was using his cell phone in close proximity to the building around the time of the fire. In addition, several individuals who were interviewed by law enforcement confirmed that Crawford had set the fire.
Assistant United States Attorney Christian A. Trabold is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Erie Police Department, and the Erie Fire Department conducted the investigation that led to the prosecution of Crawford.
Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, Crawford faces a total sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. Judge David S. Cercone scheduled sentencing for November 25, 2019, at 2:15 p.m.
Crawford’s actions not only caused damage to the property but also put the lives of those around him at risk. The investigation and prosecution of this case serve as a reminder of the severity of arson and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
