ERIE, Pa. – James Hunter, Jr., the 37-year-old owner and operator of Melo’s Stop N Shops in Erie, has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of theft of government property and WIC fraud.
According to the indictment, from July 2012 to June 2015, Hunter accepted food stamps and WIC checks for cash or ineligible items such as cigarettes. This blatant disregard for the law has landed him in hot water, with a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, a fine of $500,000, or both.
The indictment was presented to the court, and an investigation was conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture, Office of Inspector General and the Erie Bureau of Police. Assistant United States Attorney Christian A. Trabold is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
It is worth noting that an indictment is an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Hunter will have to face the music, and his actions will be scrutinized in a court of law.
Melo’s Stop N Shops, once a trusted convenience store in the Erie community, has now been tainted by allegations of WIC fraud. The store’s reputation hangs in the balance, and only time will tell if Hunter’s actions will have any lasting impact on the community.
The investigation leading to the indictment is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies in Erie, who worked tirelessly to bring Hunter to justice. As the case unfolds, one can only hope that justice will be served, and those responsible will be held accountable for their actions.
The people of Erie deserve transparency and accountability from their leaders and community members. It is our job as journalists to shine a light on these types of cases and hold those in power accountable for their actions.
