Stolen Firearms Ring Busted in Small Nebraska Town
An Alma woman has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for her role in a scheme to sell stolen firearms in Nebraska. Erin Leigh Gehrig, 41, was found guilty of possession of stolen firearms and will also serve three years on supervised release following her prison sentence.
The case began with a burglary in Bertrand, Nebraska, where 14 firearms were stolen from a home on April 13, 2021. The homeowner, a relative of Gehrig, was the victim of the break-in.
In a bizarre twist, Gehrig told police that another person approached her and asked to steal firearms. Gehrig then led the individual to the stolen guns, which were later recovered from a residence in a search warrant executed by law enforcement.
According to court documents, Gehrig arranged to sell the stolen firearms to two other individuals for $1,500. Thirteen of the 14 stolen firearms were recovered from the buyers’ home during the search.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Homeland Security, the Kearney Police Department, and the Phelps County Sheriff’s Office.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities across the country.
The PSN program is a collaborative effort between law enforcement and community members to make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
