James Mansfield, 33, of Etna, Maine, has admitted to running a sprawling underground marijuana enterprise, pleading guilty yesterday in U.S. District Court to conspiring to manufacture, distribute, and possess with intent to distribute the drug. The plea marks the end of a six-year illegal operation that federal prosecutors say was anything but a backyard grow.
Court records reveal that from October 2010 to August 2016, Mansfield coordinated with unnamed accomplices to cultivate marijuana at a high-output indoor facility in Frankfort, Maine. Hidden behind the facade of a rural property, the site was equipped with professional-grade lighting, ventilation, and irrigation systems—hallmarks of a commercial-scale drug lab designed to evade detection.
The operation collapsed in May 2016 when federal agents, acting on a search warrant, raided the facility. Inside, they seized approximately 400 live marijuana plants, 295 marijuana root balls, and a cache of processing equipment. The sheer volume of product indicated the grow was producing hundreds of pounds of pot annually—far beyond personal use or medical allowances.
Crucially, the affidavit supporting the search warrant confirmed that Mansfield and his co-conspirators were not registered medical marijuana caregivers with the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. Worse, the facility’s location had never been reported to state regulators, rendering the entire operation fully illegal under both state and federal law.
Mansfield now faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison, a fine of up to $1,000,000, and a supervised release term between three years and life. Sentencing has been postponed pending a presentence investigation report by the U.S. Probation Office, which will weigh his criminal history and role in the conspiracy.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, underscoring the federal government’s continued crackdown on illicit grow operations, even in states with medical marijuana laws. U.S. Attorney Halsey B. Frank reaffirmed that unlicensed, large-scale production remains a top-tier target—regardless of local cannabis policies.
