EVANSVILLE – In a devastating blow to the community, Jeremial Lee Leach, a 20-year-old Evansville man, has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for his role in a fentanyl trafficking operation that resulted in the death of a 19-year-old woman and at least three overdoses.
According to court documents, Leach, who used the alias “Mel” on Snapchat, advertised fentanyl-laced counterfeit pills to hundreds of recipients, including the victim who ultimately lost her life. The pills, marked with the label “M30,” were found to contain fentanyl, a powerful and highly addictive opioid that has ravaged communities across the country.
The investigation began in June 2022, when officers with the Evansville Police Department responded to a residence on Wedeking Avenue for a reported overdose. The victim, a 19-year-old woman, was revived with naloxone but later died. Investigators searched her phone and found conversations with Leach, in which they discussed a transaction for the purchase of the deadly pills.
On August 20, 2022, EPD officers responded to a restaurant on Hirschland Road for another reported overdose. The victim, a woman, was administered naloxone and regained consciousness. She told medical personnel that she had taken a 30mg pill of oxycodone, later identified as a fentanyl-laced counterfeit pill.
The investigation led to a series of arrests and searches, including a traffic stop on August 20, 2022, in which investigators found three blue pills marked “M30” in a Kia Optima and six blue pills marked “M30” in a gold Hyundai Tucson. Leach was taken into custody after a search warrant was executed at his residence on Shanklin Avenue, where officers seized 33 blue pills marked “30,” a digital scale, two 9mm pistols, and approximately $1,843 in cash.
U.S. Attorney Zachary A. Myers condemned Leach’s actions, stating, “Fentanyl traffickers commit their crimes with utter disregard for the lives of our friends and neighbors or the harm they cause to families in our community. I commend the outstanding work of the DEA, the Evansville Police Department, the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Drug Task Force, and our federal prosecutors to secure some measure of justice for the victims of this fentanyl dealer.”
Leach’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of fentanyl trafficking. His crimes have left a trail of destruction and heartbreak, and his punishment is a testament to the commitment of law enforcement to hold accountable those who peddle this deadly poison.
