NORFOLK, Va. – The feds have laid down the law on ex-Military Sealift Command contractor Scott Miserendino Sr., who’s now staring down the barrel of serious charges after allegedly pulling off a multi-million-dollar bribery scheme.
Miserendino, 58, from Stafford, has been slammed with a five-count indictment that includes conspiracy to commit bribery and honest services mail fraud, along with three counts of honest services mail fraud. The Department of Justice’s Eastern District of Virginia grand jury is going after him hard for his alleged role in the lucrative conspiracy.
The indictment claims Miserendino leveraged his position as a contractor at MSC – a U.S. Navy entity that offers support and specialized services to the military – to enrich himself through bribery, alongside Joseph P. Allen, who runs a government contracting company. They’re said to have started this dirty dance back in 1999.
According to the charges, Miserendino used his influence at MSC to secure a lucrative commission agreement with a telecommunications company, which sold satellite services to MSC. Over more than a decade, he’s accused of using his inside track to benefit this company and Allen’s firm. Among the allegations are that he advised MSC officials on service usage and directed payments to the telecommunications company.
Allen, 56, from Panama City, Florida, has already sung like a canary, pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit bribery and is set to face sentencing July 28 for his part in the $6 million scheme. Allen reportedly funneled over $2.8 million to Miserendino as bribes.
With this case, the feds are throwing their weight behind U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente and a team of federal agents from the FBI, DCIS, and NCIS, who’ve been sniffing out corruption at its roots. The press release notes that an indictment merely contains allegations, and Miserendino is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
