Hamtramck, Michigan – Former police officer Ryan McInerney, 42, is facing federal charges for allegedly using excessive force against two civilians in separate arrests on July 22, 2014. According to the indictment, McInerney assaulted the victims with a pistol without justification, resulting in serious injuries for both.
One victim suffered broken facial bones and lacerations requiring stitches, while the other suffered broken teeth, among other injuries. The indictment charges McInerney with violating the victims’ civil rights, as well as writing false reports to cover up the excessive use of force.
McInerney is also charged with two counts of using a firearm during and in relation to the civil rights offenses, which carry a mandatory minimum, consecutive sentence of five to seven years in prison for each offense. The civil rights charges carry a statutory maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for each offense, while the obstruction charges carry a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for each offense.
The case is being investigated by the FBI and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Frances Lee Carlson of the Eastern District of Michigan and Trial Attorney Risa Berkower of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. An indictment is a formal accusation of criminal conduct, not evidence of guilt. The defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
As investigators dig deeper into the case, questions remain about the circumstances surrounding the arrests and the actions of McInerney and his colleagues. The FBI has been working tirelessly to uncover the truth and bring justice to the victims.
The indictment serves as a stark reminder of the need for law enforcement accountability and the importance of protecting the rights of all citizens. As a community, we must hold our public servants to the highest standards and demand transparency and justice in all cases.
