Nicholas James Sayles, Domestic Violence Assault, Michigan 2016

MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN – Nicholas James Sayles, 34, of Kincheloe, Michigan, will spend the next 30 months in federal prison after being sentenced for a vicious assault on a woman, Acting U.S. Attorney Andrew Birge announced today. This isn’t Sayles’ first rodeo with the law – he’s a repeat offender with a history of brutalizing partners.

U.S. District Judge Paul L. Maloney didn’t show leniency. Along with the 30-month prison term, Sayles will face two years of supervised release upon his release and is ordered to pay a $100 special assessment. The sentence reflects the severity of the March 7, 2016, attack, which took place on Sault Ste. Marie Tribal land where Sayles and the victim resided.

The assault was particularly brutal. Sayles deliberately struck the victim in the face with his head, shattering one of her teeth. This act of violence wasn’t an isolated incident. Sayles previously pleaded guilty on November 30, 2016, to a federal indictment charging him with domestic violence by an habitual offender. Court records reveal a disturbing pattern of abuse.

This federal conviction marks Sayles’ second time being found guilty of domestic violence in federal court. Back in 2011, he faced similar charges. But the abuse doesn’t stop there. Sayles also has two prior state convictions for domestic violence offenses, demonstrating a clear disregard for the law and the safety of others.

The investigation into Sayles’ actions was a collaborative effort. Officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Tribal Police, Kinross Police, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation worked diligently to build a case and bring Sayles to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul D. Lochner skillfully prosecuted the case, ensuring Sayles was held accountable for his crimes.

Sayles’ sentencing serves as a stark reminder that domestic violence is a serious crime with lasting consequences. Federal prosecutors are increasingly focused on holding repeat offenders like Sayles responsible, aiming to protect vulnerable individuals and disrupt the cycle of abuse. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the pursuit of justice in federal crime.
