Assault in Mission Sends 24-Year-Old to Prison
A 24-year-old Mission man has been sentenced to 12 months in custody for his role in a brutal assault that left a victim severely injured. Waylon Black Lance, Jr., was handed down the sentence by U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on June 26, 2014.
According to court documents, the assault occurred on July 2, 2013, when Black Lance walked to the victim’s home and engaged in a verbal altercation. The situation quickly escalated, with Black Lance striking the victim multiple times with his fists.
Black Lance was initially charged with First Degree Burglary, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. However, he ultimately pleaded guilty to Assault by Striking, Beating, and Wounding on May 13, 2014.
The case was investigated by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Marie H. Ruettgers prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
As part of his sentence, Black Lance must also serve one year of supervised release and pay a $25 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. He was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following the sentencing.
The assault is a stark reminder of the dangers of violence and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. In this case, the victim suffered serious injuries and the defendant is now facing the consequences of his actions.
Black Lance’s sentence serves as a warning to those who would engage in similar behavior: the law will not tolerate violence and those who commit such crimes will be held accountable.
