Marcus Green, Marijuana Trafficking, Tennessee 2019

Memphis, TN — A former Shelby County Sheriff’s Corrections Deputy is back behind bars on federal drug charges after a damning bust tied to a supervised release violation. Marcus Green, 37, was indicted on May 7, 2019, on federal drug trafficking charges after authorities found more than 745 grams of marijuana, digital scales, and $6,627 in cash during a search of his Tipton County residence.

The arrest stems from a routine home check on April 3, 2019, conducted under ‘Operation Crime Driver,’ a federal initiative targeting high-risk offenders. A U.S. Probation Officer reported a strong odor of marijuana emanating from Green’s home. Armed with a warrant, Tipton County Sheriff’s Office executed a search and seized the narcotics and drug paraphernalia—clear indicators of distribution activity.

This isn’t Green’s first brush with federal justice. In 2015, he pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to possess Schedule II narcotics with intent to distribute—smuggling drugs into the Shelby County Jail at 201 Poplar Avenue for profit. On November 24, 2015, U.S. District Court Judge Jon Phipps McCalla sentenced him to 12 months and one day in prison, followed by two years of supervised release. That release was later extended due to a prior violation.

U.S. Attorney D. Michael Dunavant didn’t mince words: ‘Being a former law enforcement officer and having previously been convicted of a drug offense, this defendant should have known better than to continue his criminal conduct. Unfortunately, he chose to reoffend while on supervised release.’ Dunavant credited Operation Crime Driver with catching the exact kind of recidivist behavior it was built to expose.

The May 1, 2019 criminal complaint charged Green with distribution and possession of a controlled substance. The indictment returned by a federal grand jury carries a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, and two years of supervised release. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean Hord is prosecuting the case.

The investigation was led by the Tipton County Sheriff’s Office. As of now, the charges remain allegations. Marcus Green is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
