ST. LOUIS, MO – In a stunning turn of events, Shawn Brown, the former mayor of St. Peters, has pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud.
Brown appeared before United States District Judge Ronnie L. White today, with sentencing scheduled for June 29, 2017. The charges stem from a scheme that siphoned off over $65,000 from Midwest Environmental, a company he was supposed to oversee.
The saga began in 2008 when Brown approached M.S., discussing the acquisition of Midwest Environmental. Brown was tasked with overseeing day-to-day operations, including bids and payments. However, between April 2011 and May 2014, it was uncovered that Brown used NUTECH’s funds for his personal gain.
M.S., who stepped in during Brown’s absence due to health issues, discovered the embezzlement. It was revealed that Brown had stolen $65,054 from the company. The severity of mail fraud carries a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment and fines up to $250,000.
Investigation into this case was spearheaded by the FBI, with Assistant United States Attorney Dianna Collins handling the prosecution for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Brown’s actions have left his community in shock, as they come from a man who once held public office. The grimy details of this case serve as a stark reminder of the corruption that can fester within local government.
