Byron Booker, Premeditated Murder, Georgia 2024

SAVANNAH, GA: A former U.S. Army sergeant, Byron Booker, 29, of Ludowici, Ga., has been sentenced to life in federal prison without parole for the premeditated murder of Specialist Austin J. Hawk at Fort Stewart. The brutal stabbing occurred in the barracks room of the victim, who was honored by the court for his role in reporting a fellow soldier’s drug use.

Booker pleaded guilty to Premeditated Murder of a Member of the United States Uniformed Services and faces no parole as per federal system guidelines. The sentencing hearing also included an order for Booker to pay a $2,500 fine and serve five years of supervised release upon his release from prison.

“Byron Booker’s actions were deplorable,” said U.S. Attorney David H. Estes, a retired U.S. Army Colonel. “He betrayed the trust placed in him by our military and took the life of a fellow soldier in cold blood.”

The investigation into the tragic incident showcases the collaboration between Army CID, the FBI, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Rusty Higgason, assistant special agent-in-charge of the Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division’s Southeast Field Office, noted that this case serves as an example of the teamwork necessary to bring justice to victims of violent crime.

Special Agent Keri Farley of the FBI Atlanta office echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law and providing closure for Austin Hawk’s family. “Austin Hawk was taken from us in a senseless act of violence,” she said. “This sentence is a measure of justice, but it will never bring our fallen hero back.”

The Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division and the FBI continue to investigate this case, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jennifer G. Solari and Darron J. Hubbard leading the prosecution.
