WILLIAMSPORT – It’s a punch to the heart of Columbia County as Linda Tarlecki, the former Secretary/Treasurer for Conyngham Township, pleaded guilty yesterday to tax evasion and bank fraud. The 63-year-old from Aristes, Pennsylvania, faced Chief United States District Judge Matthew W. Brann.
The scam was a brazen act of thievery. Tarlecki, according to Acting United States Attorney John C. Gurganus, siphoned over $147,000 from the Township and Fulton National Bank by issuing herself forged paychecks. She was not entitled to this money, but she made sure it ended up in her pocket.
But that’s not all. Tarlecki also failed to declare this extra income on her personal taxes, leading to a staggering tax loss of over $38,000 for the IRS. The audacity of it all makes one’s blood boil.
This case was meticulously investigated by the Internal Revenue Service, and Assistant United States Attorney Geoffrey MacArthur has been at the forefront of the prosecution.
The potential sentence under federal law is as chilling as the crime itself. Tarlecki faces a maximum penalty of 35 years in prison, followed by supervised release and a fine that will no doubt make her think twice before committing such heinous acts again.
A sentence will be imposed by Judge Brann after considering all applicable federal sentencing statutes and guidelines. The grim reality of justice awaits Tarlecki as she now faces the consequences of her actions.
