Fabian Castro, a 48-year-old citizen of Mexico, has been sentenced to 16 months in federal prison for his involvement in a cockfighting venture in Nebraska. The sentencing took place on April 24, 2019 before Chief United States District Judge John M. Gerrard.
Castro pleaded guilty to one count of participation in an animal fighting venture, a charge that carries serious consequences for animal cruelty. The evidence presented during his change of plea hearing revealed that Castro was in possession of 31 gamecocks at the time of the search, and several of the birds had visible injuries and deformities from their training and participation in fights.
According to the investigation, Castro served as the trainer for Juan Pablo Sanchez Delgado’s animal fighting venture, where others would gamble on the outcome of the fights. Castro’s role in the venture has been deemed a serious offense, and his sentence reflects the severity of the crime.
The case was investigated by the Lincoln USDA, who conducted a search of Juan Pablo Sanchez Delgado’s ranch where the cockfighting took place. The investigation revealed a disturbing pattern of animal cruelty, with Castro’s involvement at the center of the operation.
Castro will also be placed on two years of supervised release after he completes his 16-month prison sentence. This added layer of punishment serves as a warning to others who may be considering similar crimes.
The sentencing of Castro marks a significant victory for animal welfare advocates, who have been pushing for stronger laws and penalties for animal cruelty. The case serves as a reminder that animal fighting is a serious crime with severe consequences.
Separately, Juan Pablo Sanchez Delgado is scheduled to be sentenced on July 10 at 10 a.m. before the Honorable John M. Gerrard.
