MIAMI, FLORIDA – FABIO LOPEZ SENTENCED FOR CHILD EXPLOITATION

A former Customs and Border Protection officer has been handed a 10-year prison sentence for enticing a minor to engage in sexual activity in Florida.

Fabio Lopez, 62, of Weston, Florida, was sentenced last week by a federal district judge in Fort Lauderdale for his role in coaxing a 16-year-old child into attempting to produce child pornography.

According to court documents, Lopez befriended the child’s mother while on duty at Miami International Airport, where he worked as an officer with Customs and Border Protection. From July 2019 through March 2020, Lopez developed a relationship with the child and frequently texted her.

It is alleged that Lopez fondled the child and offered her money in exchange for allowing him to take pornographic images of her. The former officer had even rented a local hotel room for the two and left a bag with lingerie for the child to wear.

Lopez was arrested in Davie when he arrived at the meeting spot, bringing a bag containing the incriminating evidence.

The investigation, led by Homeland Security Investigations Miami, involved assistance from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Professional Responsibility and the Pembroke Pines Police Department as part of the South Florida Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jodi L. Anton prosecuted the case, which was announced by Juan Antonio Gonzalez, Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Anthony Salisbury, Special Agent in Charge, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Miami Field Office, and Vernon T. Foret, Director of Field Operation, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Miami and Tampa Field Office.
