Fake DEA Agent Busted with Gun in NJ Hospital

TRENTON, N.J. – A brazen attempt to impersonate federal law enforcement landed a Monmouth County man in hot water today. Wesley Rucker, 34, of Tinton Falls, New Jersey, was arrested and charged with a trifecta of federal offenses: possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, impersonating a DEA agent, and possessing a fake badge. Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig announced the charges, promising a full prosecution.

The scheme unraveled October 22, 2021, when Rucker sought treatment at the emergency room of a Red Bank hospital. Hospital staff quickly spotted a handgun tucked into his waistband. Rucker allegedly claimed to be a member of law enforcement, flashing what he presented as a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) identification card. He convinced security to store the weapon in a hospital locker, but suspicions were immediately raised. A call to the Red Bank Police Department followed.

When officers arrived, Rucker doubled down on the lie, telling them he was a “DEA agent” and again displaying the fraudulent identification. Things escalated when Rucker attempted to leave the hospital *without* retrieving his handgun. Officers swiftly took him into custody, seizing the fake ID and an additional, unused fake DEA badge. A background check revealed the truth: Rucker is a previously convicted felon with absolutely no connection to the DEA.

The charges against Rucker are serious. He faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 if convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Impersonating a federal agent carries a potential three-year prison sentence and a $250,000 fine. Even the possession of the imitation badge could land him six months behind bars and a $5,000 fine. His initial appearance is scheduled for this afternoon via videoconference before U.S. Magistrate Judge Tonianne J. Bongiovanni.

The investigation was a multi-agency effort, with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), Red Bank Police Department, Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, DEA, Old Bridge Police Department, and Matawan Police Department all contributing. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Matthews is handling the prosecution for the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s Criminal Division in Trenton.

It’s crucial to remember that these are just allegations at this stage. Rucker is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. But one thing is clear: attempting to deceive law enforcement and illegally possessing a firearm is a dangerous game, and in this case, it’s landed Wesley Rucker in deep trouble.
