A brutal attack on a correctional officer has landed a FCI Schuylkill inmate behind bars for up to 8 years.
Carlos Rodriguez-Cruz, 33, of Puerto Rico, pleaded guilty on April 29, 2024, to assaulting a federal correctional officer at the Federal Correctional Institution, Schuylkill, in Minersville, Pennsylvania.
According to United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam, Rodriguez-Cruz admitted to punching the correctional officer on October 6, 2023, after the officer conducted a search of his cell and removed items of contraband.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Prisons Special Investigative Service. Assistant United States Attorney Robert J. O’Hara is prosecuting the case.
Under federal law, Rodriguez-Cruz faces up to 8 years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine.
U.S. District Court Judge Julia K. Munley will impose a sentence following a finding of guilt, taking into account applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
Rodriguez-Cruz’s guilty plea is a stark reminder that attacks on correctional officers will not be tolerated in our nation’s prisons.
