Washington D.C. – In a shocking turn of events, a group of students from SUNY-Geneseo has been named the winners of the Third Annual FDIC Academic Challenge, a competition among university and college undergraduate students concerning the U.S. banking sector.
The four-member team, comprised of Jenna Huizinga, Ian Merrihew, Jake Syzmanski, and Chris Bridenbaugh, led by faculty advisor Leonie Stone, took home top honors after impressing a panel of judges with their written submission and presentation.
The FDIC’s Center for Financial Research hosted the 2022-2023 Academic Challenge, which consisted of two rounds. In the first round, teams of undergraduate students used multiple public data sources to prepare a written submission. In the second round, finalist teams presented their findings and answered questions from a panel of judges who work in the areas of banking and bank supervision.
The team’s victory comes after a fierce competition among five finalist teams, including California State University Fullerton, James Madison University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
The FDIC’s Academic Challenge is designed to promote education and awareness about the U.S. banking sector, and to encourage students to pursue careers in banking and finance. The challenge is sponsored by the FDIC and is open to undergraduate students from across the country.
The winning team will receive a cash prize and will be recognized at the FDIC’s annual meeting. The team’s victory is a testament to their hard work and dedication to learning about the banking sector.
