FDIC, No Crime Description, Washington DC, 2022

WASHINGTON – The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) has announced the launch of the 2022 Small Business Lending Survey (SBLS), a comprehensive analysis aimed at shedding light on the lending practices and volumes of banks across America.

The FDIC, in collaboration with the U.S. Census Bureau, is reaching out to approximately 2,000 U.S. banks, seeking detailed insights into their small business lending activities. This survey, which hasn’t been conducted since 2016, aims to bridge significant data gaps and provide a clearer picture of how banks are supporting small businesses, a vital component of the nation’s economic landscape.

In a joint message to participating institutions, FDIC Acting Chairman Martin J. Gruenberg and U.S. Census Bureau Director Robert L. Santos emphasized the importance of bank lending in meeting the credit needs of small businesses. They highlighted that banks are uniquely positioned to provide this critical support, and their participation in the survey will offer valuable insights for policymakers and the public.

The survey targets a diverse range of banks across the U.S., including institutions regulated by the FDIC, the Federal Reserve System, and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. It encompasses both large banks with assets over $3 billion and smaller banks, ensuring a representative sample of the banking sector.

For those needing clarification or further information, the FDIC is hosting four informational sessions for bankers on May 11th, 12th, 16th, and 17th. These sessions are designed to address any questions and encourage broader participation in the survey.

The results of this survey will not only provide a valuable resource for policymakers but also give small businesses and the public a better understanding of the role banks play in fueling economic growth and stability.
