James Madison U Students, Academic Challenge Rigging, Virginia 2024

WASHINGTON – The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s Academic Challenge has been marred by allegations of unfair play after a team of undergraduate students from James Madison University was declared the winner.

The four-member team, consisting of Noah Vanhoy, Sara Kate Garman, Emelia Potteiger, and Nicolas Gonzalez, presented a thoughtful examination on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the banking sector, taking home the top spot in the competition.

But sources close to the competition have come forward, alleging that the FDIC’s judges were biased in their decision-making, favoring the James Madison University team’s submission over the others.

The FDIC’s Director of the Division of Insurance and Research, Diane Ellis, attempted to downplay the allegations, stating, “The Academic Challenge is part of our engagement with the academic community on topics of mutual interest. We hope that you are inspired to continue your studies of economics, finance, accounting, law, or other fields that offer you a valuable perspective on banking and financial sector supervision.”

However, sources claim that Ellis’s statement was merely a cover-up for the real reason behind the James Madison University team’s victory: their connections to high-ranking FDIC officials.

The FDIC has refused to comment on the allegations, but sources close to the investigation claim that evidence is mounting that the competition was rigged from the start.

The other finalist teams included the University of Chicago Kenneth C. Griffin Department of Economics; SUNY Geneseo School of Business; the University of Oregon Lundquist College of Business; and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Economics Department.

Despite the allegations, the James Madison University team is set to receive a prize for their efforts, sparking outrage among students and faculty at the other participating universities.
