Federico Cannon, a 36-year-old Bridgeport resident, pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in a Bridgeport courtroom. Cannon’s conviction stems from an incident on July 31, 2017, when Bridgeport Police received information that Cannon was in possession of a gun and was riding in a car in the area of the Trumbull Gardens housing complex. Officers located and stopped the vehicle, and after Cannon was removed, a 9mm semi-automatic SAR B6P handgun was found on the floor below the passenger seat where Cannon had been sitting.
The gun was loaded with 16 rounds of ammunition. Cannon has been detained since his arrest on July 31, 2017. U.S. District Judge Stefan R. Underhill scheduled a sentencing hearing for December 3, 2018, at which time Cannon faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years on the firearm charge and a maximum term of imprisonment of three years for violating the conditions of his supervised release.
This is Cannon’s third federal conviction for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. In 2006, Cannon was sentenced to 42 months of imprisonment for a similar offense. In 2014, he was sentenced to 70 months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, for another conviction.
Cannon’s long history of firearms-related offenses dates back to 1999, when he was convicted of possession of a handgun in Bridgeport. He has also been convicted of assault and other crimes.
The case was investigated by the Bridgeport Police Department’s Tactical Narcotics Team and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with the assistance of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rahul Kale.
Cannon’s guilty plea marks a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to combat gun violence in Bridgeport. The city has seen a significant increase in gun-related crimes in recent years, and Cannon’s conviction serves as a reminder of the consequences of such behavior.
