Federal authorities are cracking down on potential voter rights abuses in California and New Mexico, with the Justice Department announcing plans to monitor elections in three counties this June.
According to sources, the feds will be keeping a close eye on voting processes in Alameda and Napa Counties, California, and Cibola County, New Mexico. The move comes as part of an effort to ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act and other federal voting rights statutes.
The Justice Department explained that the Voting Rights Act prohibits discrimination in the election process on the basis of race, color or membership in a minority language group.
In Alameda County, federal observers from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) will be assigned to monitor polling place activities based on a court order. These observers will watch and record activities during voting hours at polling locations, while Civil Rights Division attorneys will coordinate the federal activities and maintain contact with local election officials.
Additionally, department personnel will be monitoring polling place activities in Napa and Cibola Counties. Civil Rights Division attorneys will be coordinating federal activities and maintaining contact with local election officials in these jurisdictions.
Each year, the Justice Department deploys federal observers from OPM and departmental staff to monitor elections across the country. If you believe you’ve witnessed voter rights abuses, including acts of harassment or intimidation, you can file a complaint by calling the Voting Section of the Civil Rights Division at 1-800-253-3931.
