Crises in the booth: Feds to keep close eye on Crisfield, Md. election.
The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division announced today that it will be monitoring the municipal election in Crisfield, Maryland on June 20, 2012. The move is aimed at ensuring compliance with the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
The Voting Rights Act, enacted in 1965, prohibits discrimination in the election process on the basis of race, color, or membership in a minority language group. Justice Department personnel will be on hand to monitor polling place activities in Crisfield, with a Civil Rights Division attorney coordinating federal activities and maintaining contact with local election officials.
Each year, the Justice Department deploys hundreds of federal observers from the Office of Personnel Management, as well as departmental staff, to monitor elections across the country. The move is a sign that the feds are serious about protecting the integrity of the voting process.
To file complaints about discriminatory voting practices, including acts of harassment or intimidation, voters may call the Voting Section of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division at 1-800-253-3931.
