Federal agencies are investigating the death of Jamar Clark for possible federal crimes, officials announced.
U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota Andrew M. Luger, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Vanita Gupta, and Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Minneapolis Division Richard T. Thornton jointly released a statement on the ongoing investigation.
"The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota, Civil Rights Division and FBI Minneapolis Division are conducting an independent investigation into whether the death of Jamar Clark violated any federal criminal statutes," the statement read.
As part of the investigation, federal prosecutors and FBI agents are conducting a thorough review of all evidence, including interviewing relevant witnesses and reviewing relevant information.
The agencies stressed that releasing any evidence during the ongoing investigation would be detrimental to the probe, and vowed to conduct the investigation in a fair, thorough, and expeditious manner.
The agencies’ investigation is seen as a major development in the case, and a sign of the federal government’s commitment to ensuring justice is served.
As the investigation continues, the community remains on high alert, demanding justice for Jamar Clark and his family.
