Felipe Abad Medina-Rubio, Cocaine Importation, Texas 2022
Felipe Abad Medina-Rubio, a 22-year-old Tamaulipas, Mexico resident, has pleaded guilty to importing cocaine into the United States, announced U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani.
The guilty plea came after Medina-Rubio attempted to smuggle approximately four kilograms of cocaine into the country through the Hidalgo port of entry. He admitted he expected to be paid $2,000 to carry out the smuggling operation.
According to the plea, on Dec. 2, 2022, Medina-Rubio arrived at the checkpoint. He claimed to have no illegal drugs in his vehicle, but authorities referred him to secondary inspection. A K-9 unit alerted to the presence of narcotics near the battery of his vehicle, prompting an X-ray examination. The X-ray revealed several anomalies, leading to the discovery of four bricks of cocaine weighing approximately four kilograms. The estimated street value of the seized cocaine is $16,000.
Felipe Abad Medina-Rubio faces up to 40 years in prison and a possible $5 million fine. U.S. District Judge Ricardo Hinojosa will impose sentencing on Aug. 17. Medina-Rubio has been and will remain in custody pending the hearing.
The investigation was conducted by Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Theodore Parran III prosecuted the case.
