Felon Caught with Fully Automatic Gun
A Davenport man has been sentenced to federal prison for firearm charges. Brenton Mon’Shae Jones, 24, was sentenced to 46 months in prison by United States District Court Judge Stephanie M. Rose on Tuesday, June 29, 2021. Jones was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release to follow his prison sentence and pay $300.00 to the Crime Victims’ Fund.
According to the indictment, on August 12, 2020, Jones was in possession of a Glock 23 .40 caliber pistol that had been modified to function as a fully automatic machinegun. As a result, Jones was in possession of a machinegun, which is a federal crime. Jones was prohibited from possessing any firearms due to prior felony convictions, including a 2018 conviction in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa for the offenses of felon in possession of a firearm and possession of heroin with intent to distribute.
On August 12, 2020, Jones was serving a period of supervised release associated with that conviction. Despite being prohibited from possessing firearms, Jones continued to break the law and possess a fully automatic machinegun.
The Davenport Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives investigated the case. Acting United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa made the announcement.
Jones’ sentence is to be served consecutively to a supervised release revocation sentence of 18 months imposed the same day. This means that Jones will not be eligible for parole until he has served 64 months in prison.
The case is a prime example of the dangers of possessing firearms while on supervised release. Jones’ actions put himself and others at risk of serious harm. The court’s decision to sentence Jones to federal prison sends a strong message that possessing firearms while on supervised release will be taken seriously.
This case is a partnership between the Davenport Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The joint effort led to the successful prosecution of Jones and the removal of a deadly firearm from the community.
