CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Jeremiah Clinton Gray, 43, of Blue Ridge, Georgia, is headed to federal prison after a high-speed chase and gun bust that stretched from Ohio into West Virginia. Gray received a 16-month sentence today, followed by three years of supervised release, for illegally possessing firearms – a clear violation considering his already lengthy rap sheet.
The chaos began July 22, 2024, when law enforcement in Jackson County, Ohio, received reports of a man openly carrying a firearm, decked out in body armor, and flashing a bogus badge inside a local business. That man was quickly identified as Gray. He bolted from the scene in a vehicle with no license plates, immediately triggering a pursuit. Forget a simple traffic stop; Gray led officers on a chase that crossed state lines, finally being boxed in near Charleston, West Virginia, thanks to the strategic deployment of spike strips.
A search of Gray and his vehicle turned up a serious arsenal: a loaded Taurus model 1911 Officer 9mm pistol was found on his person, and a loaded Mossberg model 590 Shockwave .410-gauge shotgun was recovered from the vehicle. It wasn’t just the presence of the weapons, but the fact that Gray, as a convicted felon, had absolutely no legal right to possess them. He *knew* it too.
Court records show Gray was already a convicted felon, having pled guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute over 500 grams of cocaine in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee on October 20, 2023. That prior conviction automatically disqualifies him from owning a firearm under federal law. This wasn’t a mistake; it was a deliberate act of defiance.
Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston announced the sentencing, praising the collaborative effort of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the West Virginia State Police, and the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office. Senior United States District Judge David A. Faber handed down the sentence, with Assistant United States Attorney JC MacCallum leading the prosecution. This case falls under “Operation Take Back America,” a broad initiative aimed at dismantling cartels and combating violent crime across the nation.
The Department of Justice is throwing everything it has at transnational criminal organizations, and Gray’s case is a small piece of that larger puzzle. Those seeking further details can find a copy of the press release on the U.S. Attorney’s Office website for the Southern District of West Virginia, and related court documents are available on PACER under Case No. 2:25-cr-35. Don’t expect this to be the last we hear of Operation Take Back America – or the last felon caught trying to arm himself illegally.
