Aaron Lyons, Felon in Possession of Firearm, Pennsylvania 2024

A 26-year-old Pittsburgh man has been sentenced to 18 months to 3 years in prison for illegally possessing a pistol and ammunition. Aaron Lyons, 26, of 617 Swissvale Avenue, was convicted of violating federal law by possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon.

United States District Judge David Cercone imposed the sentence on Lyons following his guilty plea. Lyons had been convicted of four offenses in three different cases between 2014 and 2018.

The incident that led to Lyons’ conviction occurred on November 19, 2019, when Pittsburgh Police conducted a traffic stop in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Officers pat-down Lyons and felt a gun barrel in his jacket pocket. A scuffle ensued after Lyons failed to comply with officer instructions, and a loaded .40 caliber Smith and Wesson pistol was recovered from him.

Federal law prohibits anyone who has been convicted of a crime punishable by a term of imprisonment exceeding one year from possessing a firearm or ammunition. Assistant United States Attorney David Lew prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.

The Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police conducted the investigation leading to Lyons’ conviction.

Lyons’ sentence includes three years of supervised release following his imprisonment. The sentence reflects the seriousness of the crime and the need to protect public safety.

Aaron Lyons’ case serves as a reminder of the dangers of possessing firearms as a convicted felon. The public should be aware of the risks associated with such behavior and the consequences that follow.
