Felons Sentenced for Fatal Shootout

Two Jacksonville men, Evonte Earl Glover and Terry Lavon Shuman, have been sentenced to eight years and four months in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. Glover, 29, and Shuman, 27, were involved in a shootout on November 10, 2019, in the Cassat Avenue area of Jacksonville, which resulted in the death of another individual.

According to court documents, Glover and Shuman fired handguns several times during the shooting incident. Glover had previously been convicted of three felonies, including a home invasion robbery, possession of cocaine, and sale, manufacture, or delivery of cocaine. Shuman had previously been convicted of armed robbery and fleeing or attempting to elude police, making them both prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition under federal law.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. It was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Cyrus P. Zomorodian and Assistant United States Attorney Beatriz Gonzalez.

The case is being prosecuted as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, a joint federal, state, and local effort to reduce violent crime. PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.

Glover pleaded guilty on May 12, 2021, and Shuman pleaded guilty on April 7, 2021. Their sentences reflect the severity of their crimes and the need to hold individuals accountable for their actions.

The PSN Program has been proven to be effective in reducing violent crime, and this case is a prime example of its success. Through this program, stakeholders work together to identify and address the most pressing violent crime problems in the community.

The sentences handed down to Glover and Shuman serve as a warning to others who would engage in similar behavior. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
